There’s this show that Eddie Stubbs hosts and WSM broadcasts live each week, different from the one that’s gone on for decades in a big theatre cast as a barn. This show has only been around for a month—in a barn behind the Loveless Café, no less—and its lineup each Wednesday is all-Americana (it’s not Little Jimmy Dickens’ scene). The fifth installment of Music City Rootscombines a trio of rising acoustic bands with an old hand at writing and singing songs of a folk persuasion. Holy Ghost Tent Revival—a Vaudevillian punk sextet with horns—and the amped up jam-string band the New Familiars are both from North Carolina, just like the Avett Brothers. The Black Lillies—a recent outgrowth of Robinella and the CCstringband and the everybodyfields—play brooding, bluesy mountain music. And Nanci Griffith is the odd one out, with 30 years of warm-hearted, perceptive storytelling to her credit.
