I drove out to the Loveless Barn in Nashville last night (Jan. 13) for the weekly Music City Roots show, a new venture on WSM 650 AM that spotlights the broad spectrum of Americana music. During his portion of the evening, singer-songwriter Will Hoge referred to the event as a junior varsity of the Grand Ole Opry, which I think is a fitting description. After a handful of songs from his exceptional new album, The Wreckage, as well as some older tunes, the roots rocker earned a standing ovation and an eager line at the merch table. If he's invited to play the Opry any time soon, I'm definitely going. When he was here at CMT a few months ago, he recorded a live version of "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," written about his fascination with the heritage of Music City, and his good fortune of being raised here. After that, he asked if he could do one more tune. So here it is, just in time for freezing weather: "My Winter Coat."
