
Next Best Thing
They didn't grow up playing instruments or singing everyday. Although they traveled thousands of miles and listened to more bluegrass than most people hear in a lifetime --- even BEFORE they were born.
When they reached school age, their father became "Mr. Mom"; a display of his devotion to his marriage and children; and strong support of his wife's talents, as she embarked upon a solo music career. He taught the girls to play basketball & softball. Music was the farthest thing from their minds. Sally aspired to play in the WNBA. Tensel observed surgeries with family friend, Dr. Glenn Browning; hoping to study medicine.
As with most teenagers, their life took a very unexpected turn after their high school graduation. Though they might have sang an occasional song with their mother; playing an instrument or performing was still far from their mind.
It wasn't until the sisters transferred to East Tennessee State University, when their epiphany struck. They joined the ETSU bluegrass program. The program and their instructor, Dan Boner; nurtured their natural ability to sing and play; and they made the discovery that bluegrass was in their blood.
The girls traveled to their annual Missouri festival; an event they have attended since birth. When an unexpected vacancy in the stage schedule left the Vincent's without a band, the girls were asked to perform.
That impromptu performance at their grandparents festival in July 2007, solidified the certainty of the band.
They quickly named their group on the way to the stage; as the 6th generation of the musical Vincent Family; and were introduced as the Next Best Thing!
Sally Sandker was born in Kirksville, Missouri on October 14, 1986. She graduated from Schuyler County High School in 2005 and began her college career at the University of Kentucky in the Fall of 2005. She transferred to East Tennessee State University in the Fall of 2006 where she takes part in the Bluegrass and Old Time Country Music Program. At age 19, Sally began taking guitar lessons from Daniel Boner. Sally appeared on the Grammy nominated “Ragin' Live” album with Rhonda Vincent, soon after making her first appearance on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.
Tensel Sandker was born in Kirksville, Missouri on December 9, 1988. She graduated from Schuyler County High School and began her college career at Georgia State University in the Fall of 2007. She began playing the bass in the Summer of 2007. She transferred to East Tennessee State University in the Fall of 2008 where she takes part in the Bluegrass and Old Time Country Music Program. Tensel co-wrote "I Give All My Love To You" with Rhonda Vincent and Herb Sandker. The song was a duet by Rhonda Vincent & Russell Moore on "Good Thing Going" - a #1 Billboard album for 7 consecutive weeks!
