Peter Bradley Adams
Peter Bradley Adams was one half of the duo "eastmountainsouth" signed by Robbie Robertson (of The Band) to Dreamworks Records in 2002. He has released two solo records ("Gather Up" and "Leavetaking") and is set to release his third, "Traces" this September on Sarathan Record
Peter Bradley Adams began his musical journey in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of five when he discovered the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s album in his father’s record collection. After wearing the record out on his aqua green Playschool record player, Adams went on to create his own house music, setting up plastic trash cans and using pencils as drum sticks. Eventually his grandfather purchased real drum sticks to replace the pencils and a true musician was born. Peter’s Beatles obsession quickly grew into Beatles lip-sync sessions with friends on his street, and impromptu basement concerts for parents.
The first instrument that Adams played, at age 6, was a piano purchased by his parents from the old Birmingham, ALTutweiler Hotel before it was demolished. Adams remembers both the piano and the lemon seeds inside it that were left over from spilled cocktails.
As a child, Peter’s music was influenced by his grandfather who had been a jazz clarinetist in big bands during the time of Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain. Also a pianist, Adams remembers lying under his grandfather’s piano listening to him play.
Adams' went on to earn a B.A. and Masters Degree in composition and eventually wound up in Los Angeles where he worked as a freelance film and TV composer.
In 2000, Adams co-founded the duo Eastmountainsouth, and in 2002 they were signed by Robbie Robertson (of The Band) to DreamWorks Records. Adams has since released three solo records (Gather Up, Leavetaking and Traces) and is releasing his fourth, Between Us, on June 14 through Maine-based label Mishara Music. The record was produced by Adams, Jonathan Trebing and longtime collaborator Lex Price.
When asked about the progression from his first release Gather Up to his current release, Between Us, Adams says, "I think I've been progressively finding my voice, both as a songwriter and a singer; and although I feel like I'm finally starting to hit my stride, there's still this continual dissatisfaction.... still a feeling that I haven't found it yet."
1. "I May Not Let Go" - I wrote this song with Garrison Starr. (She's planning on recording it too). The first little bits of the verse melody came to me while riding on the back of a bright red Vespa through Brooklyn.
2. "My Love Is My Love" - The heating in my building broke one night this past winter. I was so cold that i turned the oven on, opened it, and pulled a chair right up in front of it...and wrote this song.
3. "Don't Rest Your Weight On Me Now" - I wrote this song while I was in India. We recorded it twice, and got a lot closer the second time around. But there may be yet a third version in the pipelines.
4. "Be Still My Heart" -This song features my friend Molly Parden on vocals. The narrator is running and trying to stand still at the same time.
5. "Interlude for Piano" - I recorded this on a beautiful 19th century Steinway that i found in Manhattan. Joe MacMahan provided the drones and other noises floating around it.
6. "Katy" - I wrote this song with Nate Campany. We both know the subject of this song (who's name may or may not be Katy)....I was lucky to have k.d. lang's band (the sis boom bang) back me up on this one.
7. "Mother Don't Look Down" -I wrote this for my grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer's. I'm joined on this recording by my former Eastmountainsouth bandmate, Kate Maslich-Bode.
8. "Full Moon Song" - I like to say this is about my recent jail break from the Calhoun County Jail in Georgia. It's true, I was actually taken to jail in Calhoun County, but there was no jail break... just a bail-myself-out situation.
9. "Between Us" - Sometimes when I walk around New York City, I feel a strange mix of endless possibility and total isolation. This songs describes that. And the Sis Boom Bang are backing me up on this track too.
10. "Waltz for the Faithless" -This was the first song I wrote when I moved to Brooklyn. I'm joined by Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still) on harmony vocals.
11. "Emily's Rain" - This song is based on a conversation my friend had with her father. And right after their conversation it rained.
