Iodine
Sometimes I wonder, was I raised in the mountains, or was I raised by the mountains?" Growing up in the heart of the Appalachain Mountains, where the lines of East Tennessee and Virginia intersect, it is easily discernable where singer/songwriter Iodine draws her inspiration. She has been "dipped and stewed" in these rich roots, which is reflected strongly in her musical style and writing. Always out to create her own story - which in her opinion is far better than listening to one - she always was searching for ways to entertain herself while exploring the countryside and spending her summers fishing with her father at a neighboring catfish farm. Her ability to always find an adventure and trouble along the way earned her the nickname "Iodine" by her mother at a young age.
As an only child born to Appalachain natives, both of her grandfathers whom Iodine lovingly called her "Pappaws" were coal miners and her great grandfather was a train conductor. Always observant and exploring, Iodine calls upon her upbringing when writing and singing on her self-titled album. She made her way to Nashville, TN 12 years ago not quite sure what she was looking for, but she knew she had a long history of great stories to be told and a guitar and a voice with which to tell them.
In 2001, Iodine landed her first publishing deal with Sony Music and has been in front of many major label executives. Since 2005, she has focused on making her own creative project - the Iodine album. She has been fortunate to have one of her songs featured on The Grascals' Grammy nominated record. Iodine's song, "Little House of Mine" was recorded by 3 Fox Drive and was the band's first video on GAC. In 2006, Iodine's song, "Coal Dust Kisses" which was written about her aforementioned grandfather was released as a CD/book project called "Music of Coal".
Recently, Iodine was introduced to the most important song of her life, which was co-written with her husband, Jamie Johnson and Jenee Fleenor. The song entitled, "I am Strong" was writtern for the children of St. Jude's hospital and features an all-star cast of country artists, including: The Grascals, Joe Nichols, Darryl Worley, Oak Ridge Boys, Rand Owen (of the group, Alabama), Charlie Daniels, Tom T. Hall, actor/singer Steven Seagal, Terri Clark and the legendary Dolly Parton. This song will be on The Grascals "Grascals and Friends" album and is available for purchase at any Cracker Barrel location as of January 3, 2011. A video documenting the experience was filmed and it recorded the power the song had emotionally on the children and their families - a truly moving experience.
Last spring (Spring 2010), Iodine called upon a fellow artist/singer/songwriter Shawn Byrne and asked that he help produce her record. That record, the self-titled album, IODINE, is the realization of one of her lifelong dreams. With Iodine writing or co-writing a hefty amount of the tracks, she hopes everyone loves it as much as she does. Please ENJOY!
